Dental veneers have been used for several decades for changing people's smiles. They are custom-made to fit over teeth and cover imperfections such as stains, chips, fractures, and uneven gaps. Dental veneers can also resize and reshape the teeth to make them appear more natural.
Getting dental veneers
Before a dentist recommends dental veneers, they will first check the teeth to ensure that no oral issues, like plaque, gum disease, or cavities, are present. These dental issues must be treated before veneers can be affixed to the teeth. Also, the dentist will check if veneers will be effective for achieving the desired results. This part is necessary because once veneers are placed, the process is irreversible.
Preparing the teeth for veneers
The dentist will shave off a small layer of the tooth enamel. The extent of the preparation depends on the condition of the teeth. The dental professional will remove any existing decay and shape the teeth to correct gaps and chips. A color that matches the appearance of the rest of the teeth will also be selected. Overly white veneers will not look natural.
Next, the dentist will make impressions of the patient's dentition to create veneers that fit correctly over the teeth. Afterward, the dental impressions will be forwarded to the dental lab that will produce the veneers, usually from porcelain material, although composite can also be used.
Dental veneer placement
Once the veneers are ready, the dentist will place them over the teeth to change the size, shape, and color of the teeth. Minor adjustments may be necessary to ensure a seamless fit.
With correct placement and adequate care, dental veneers are durable and can survive up to 15 years of use. It is possible to repair them when damages occur, but a replacement may be necessary in severe cases.
Veneer maintenance
Patients are advised to limit the consumption of food items that can stain or break their veneers. They should also not use their teeth on hard substances, such as bottle caps or nails. For oral hygiene, patients can continue to clean their teeth as usual by flossing and brushing. Regular dental checkups and cleaning appointments with the dentist will keep the oral cavity in the best condition.
Visit the dentist to transform your smile
The dentist offers different options to improve the size, shape, and color of the teeth, including dental veneers. After placement, the teeth will look straighter and more natural. Veneers can last for a long time if maintained properly. If you would like to learn more about veneers, contact the dental office to book a consultation appointment.
